It’s not simply “emotion on the right, reason on the left,” but something far more complex and interesting. Before McGilchrist became a psychiatrist, he was a literary scholar — and his work on the brain is shaped by a deep questioning of the role of art and culture. His recent book The Master and His Emissary explores the nature of the brain’s two hemispheres (the right is the “master,” in McGilchrist’s terms). How have our two hemispheres evolved to relate — and how did their relationship create our consciousness, our culture, and our ability to understand our own brains?

About 2 minutes into the video, there is a wonderful explanation about the difference between single-pointed attetnion (narrow focus) and broad attention (broad focus). In addition to the depth and clarity of McGilchrist’s ideas, the animation is superb, not only keeping the viewer’s interest, but using wonderful visuals to help support McGilchrist’s explanations. In the end, McGilchrist reveals his bias:

“We have created a soceity that honors the servant but has forgotten the gift"

Gregg Krech Author, Naikan: Gratitude, Grace and the Japanese Art of Self-reflection (2002)| Author, A Natural Approach to Mental Wellness (2004, 2011)| Author, A Finger Pointing to the Moon (2000)| Editor, Thirty Thousand Days: A Journal for Purposeful Living (1993-Present)| Director, ToDo Institute (Vermont) (1992-Present)

http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Depression and How To Overcome it- Some Tips

A Special Application

Depression plays tricks on you. It tells you things are hopeless, when there's hope. It tells you life is only suffering, when there is joy and love to be discovered. It tells you that you can't do this or that, when you can take action in spite of your feelings It tells you there's no way out, when there is a way out. Our natural response to feeling depressed is to try to find a way to feel better. This sounds reasonable but it sets us off on an endless loop of focusing on our feelings and trying to fix them directly with our mind. Generally, this doesn't work - what you pay attention to grows. Our feelings fluctuate -- all feelings, including depression. We notice this process. We accept whatever feelings arise. We stop fighting with the feelings we don't like and take them with us as we go about our work in the world. As we learn to coexist with our depression, the depression loses its power over us. We conquer depression through acceptance, activity and purpose.

“A man's concern, even his despair over the worthwhileness of life is an existential distress, but by no means a mental disease. It may well be interpreting the first in terms of the latter motivates a doctor to bury his patient's existential despair under a heap of tranquilizing drugs. It is his task, rather, to pilot the patient through his existential crisis of growth and development.” -- Viktor Frankl, M.D. (psychiatrist and survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp)

“From the experience with the fickleness of feelings and the unpredictability of their onset and departure, I was able to say to myself, 'This will pass'. It is knowing that the feelings of depression will pass, and will probably visit me again, that makes living with very uncomfortable feelings a very doable thing.” -- Julie Phillips

Tips for Dealing with Depression

By Gregg Krech (from The Downs and Outs of Depression)

1. Get your body moving - exercise - even though you don't feel like it

2. Change your diet - among other things, eliminate sugar and caffeine

3. Take steps to resolve or change your life situation (address your problems constructively)

4. Learn the skill of "coexisting with unpleasant feelings" (accept what cannot be controlled)

5. Learn to work skillfully with your attention

6. Practice self-reflection to get a more accurate picture of your reality (see maxim below)

7. Find a purpose that is worth living and striving for

Maxim

“Examine Life Outside the Boundaries of Your Difficulties” -- Gregg Krech

Periodically we found ourselves in challenging situations - we lose our jobs, get sick, experience the death of a loved one or end a long term relationship. In these moments we can become immersed in our own pain. Our attention becomes trapped within limited boundaries of our suffering. But there is more to life than we are seeing. As we expand our view of life we may find that even within the context of our suffering, compassion, care and support are our close companions. Often, as a result of the support of others, we are able to recover from our problems. But how often do we make room for gratitude in the midst of suffering.

When we expand the boundaries of our attention we see a life in which we are continuously supported through our most difficult moments. A life which is actually helping us to deal with our difficulties.

From Naikan: Gratitude, Grace and the Japanese Art of Self-Reflection by Gregg Krech. Stone Bridge Press, 2002.

“The best cure for worry, depression, melancholy, brooding, is to go deliberately forth and try to lift with one's sympathy the gloom of somebody else.” -- Arnold Bennett

“In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” -- Albert Camus

“Many of us spend our whole lives running from feeling with the mistaken belief that you cannot bear the pain. But you have already borne the pain. What you have not done is feel all you are beyond that pain.” -- Kahlil Gibran

From: http://www.todoinstitute.org/depression.html
http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Outdoors and Out of Reach, Studying the Brain

August 15, 2010

By MATT RICHTEL

GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, Utah — Todd Braver emerges from a tent nestled against the canyon wall. He has a slight tan, except for a slim pale band around his wrist.

For the first time in three days in the wilderness, Mr. Braver is not wearing his watch. “I forgot,” he says.

It is a small thing, the kind of change many vacationers notice in themselves as they unwind and lose track of time. But for Mr. Braver and his companions, these moments lead to a question: What is happening to our brains?

Mr. Braver, a psychology professor at Washington University in St. Louis, was one of five neuroscientists on an unusual journey. They spent a week in late May in this remote area of southern Utah, rafting the San Juan River, camping on the soft banks and hiking the tributary canyons.

It was a primitive trip with a sophisticated goal: to understand how heavy use of digital devices and other technology changes how we think and behave, and how a retreat into nature might reverse those effects.

Cellphones do not work here, e-mail is inaccessible and laptops have been left behind. It is a trip into the heart of silence — increasingly rare now that people can get online even in far-flung vacation spots.

As they head down the tight curves the San Juan has carved from ancient sandstone, the travelers will, not surprisingly, unwind, sleep better and lose the nagging feeling to check for a phone in the pocket. But the significance of such changes is a matter of debate for them.

Some of the scientists say a vacation like this hardly warrants much scrutiny. But the trip’s organizer, David Strayer, a psychology professor at the University of Utah, says that studying what happens when we step away from our devices and rest our brains — in particular, how attention, memory and learning are affected — is important science.

“Attention is the holy grail,” Mr. Strayer says.

“Everything that you’re conscious of, everything you let in, everything you remember and you forget, depends on it.”

Echoing other researchers, Mr. Strayer says that understanding how attention works could help in the treatment of a host of maladies, like attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia and depression. And he says that on a day-to-day basis, too much digital stimulation can “take people who would be functioning O.K. and put them in a range where they’re not psychologically healthy.”

The quest to understand the impact on the brain of heavy technology use — at a time when such use is exploding — is still in its early stages. To Mr. Strayer, it is no less significant than when scientists investigated the effects of consuming too much meat or alcohol.

But stepping away is easier for some than others. The trip begins with a strong defense of digital connectedness, a debate that revolves around one particularly important e-mail.

On the Road

The five scientists on the trip can be loosely divided into two groups: the believers and the skeptics.

The believers are Mr. Strayer and Paul Atchley, 40, a professor at the University of Kansas who studies teenagers’ compulsive use of cellphones. They argue that heavy technology use can inhibit deep thought and cause anxiety, and that getting out into nature can help. They take pains in their own lives to regularly log off.

The skeptics use their digital gadgets without reservation. They are not convinced that anything lasting will come of the trip — personally or scientifically.

This group includes the fast-talking Mr. Braver, 41, a brain imaging expert; Steven Yantis, 54, the tall and contemplative chairman of the psychological and brain sciences department at Johns Hopkins, who studies how people switch between tasks; and Art Kramer, 57, a white-bearded professor at the University of Illinois who has gained attention for his studies of the neurological benefits of exercise.

Also on the trip are a reporter and a photographer, and Richard Boyer, a quiet outdoorsman and accomplished landscape painter, who helps Mr. Strayer lead the journey.

Among the bright academic lights in the group, Mr. Kramer is the most prominent. At the time of the trip he was about to take over a $300,000-a-year position as director of the Beckman Institute, a leading research center at the University of Illinois with around 1,000 scientists and staff workers and tens of millions of dollars in grant financing.

He is also intense personally — someone who has been challenging himself since early in life; he says he left home when he was a teenager, became an amateur boxer and, later, flew airplanes, rock-climbed and smashed his knee in a “high-speed skiing accident.”

They are driving six hours from Salt Lake City to the river, and they stop at a camping store for last-minute supplies. Mr. Kramer waits out front, checking e-mail on his BlackBerry Curve. This sets off a debate between the believers and skeptics.

Back in the car, Mr. Kramer says he checked his phone because he was waiting for important news: whether his lab has received a $25 million grant from the military to apply neuroscience to the study of ergonomics. He has instructed his staff to send a text message to an emergency satellite phone the group will carry with them.

Mr. Atchley says he doesn’t understand why Mr. Kramer would bother. “The grant will still be there when you get back,” he says.

“Of course you’d want to know about a $25 million grant,” Mr. Kramer responds. Pressed by Mr. Atchley on the significance of knowing immediately, he adds: “They would expect me to get right back to them.”

It is a debate that has become increasingly common as technology has redefined the notion of what is “urgent.” How soon do people need to get information and respond to it? The believers in the group say the drumbeat of incoming data has created a false sense of urgency that can affect people’s ability to focus.

In his case, Mr. Kramer says there have been few side effects: the only time he could recall being overly distracted by technology was when he became too immersed in writing a paper, and was late to pick up his teenage daughter.

“As academics, we live on computers,” he says.

The scenery has turned spartan as they drop down into a red-rock desert. The group stops for gas in Green River, where Mr. Kramer checks his e-mail again. Mr. Strayer quips that he shows signs of addiction.

“Some people think only others have the problem,” Mr. Strayer says. But he concedes of Mr. Kramer, whom he likes and under whom he earned his doctorate: “He’s under a lot of pressure.”

On the River

They awaken at the Recapture Lodge, a rustic two-story motel surrounded by cottonwood trees. There are no phones in the rooms, but there is wireless Internet access, installed a few years ago because, the proprietor says, people could not stand to be without it.

Mr. Kramer still has not received any news on the grant. He stuffs his laptop into a backpack and stores it at the motel office.

Hours later, the group arrives at the raft launching site, Mexican Hat, named for a sombrero-shaped rock outcropping. The travelers assemble and pack the rafts, loading food for five days, beer, water jugs, a portable toilet, tents and sleeping bags, kitchen and first aid supplies. Then they’re off.

A short distance downstream they see it: a narrow steel bridge 150 feet above the river — after which there is no longer any cellphone coverage.

“It’s the end of civilization,” Mr. Atchley jokes.

Late in the afternoon, they make camp on the banks. They eat pork chops, the Big Dipper brilliant above, the thousand-foot canyon walls narrowing their view of the heavens. A few bats dart and dive, seeking bugs drawn to the flashlights.

The men drink Tecate beer and talk about the brain. They are thinking about a seminal study from the University of Michigan that showed people can better learn after walking in the woods than after walking a busy street.

The study indicates that learning centers in the brain become taxed when asked to process information, even during the relatively passive experience of taking in an urban setting. By extension, some scientists believe heavy multitasking fatigues the brain, draining it of the ability to focus.

Mr. Strayer, the trip leader, argues that nature can refresh the brain. “Our senses change. They kind of recalibrate — you notice sounds, like these crickets chirping; you hear the river, the sounds, the smells, you become more connected to the physical environment, the earth, rather than the artificial environment.”

“That’s why they call it vacation. It’s restorative,” Mr. Braver says. He wonders if there’s any science behind the nature idea. “Part of being a good scientist is being skeptical.”

Mr. Braver accepts the Michigan research but wants to understand precisely what happens inside the brain. And he wonders: Why don’t brains adapt to the heavy stimulation, turning us into ever-stronger multitaskers?

“Right,” says Mr. Kramer, the skeptic. “Why wouldn’t the circuits be exercised, in a sense, and we’d get stronger?”

Ideas Start to Flow

Scientists have long thought about how new forms of media affect attention — from the printing press to the television. But the modern study of attention emerged in the early 1980s with the spread of machines that allowed researchers to see changes in blood flow and electrical activity in the brain. Newer machines have let them pinpoint the parts of the brain that light up when people switch from one task to another, or when they are paying attention to music or a movie.

This has become such a sizzling field of research that two years ago the National Institutes of Health established a division to support studies of the parts of the brain involved with focus.

Now, Mr. Yantis says, “we can study the brain and the mind together in a rigorous scientific way, rather than a Freudian sit-back-and-think-about-it way.”

This trip is more about rowing while thinking. Mr. Braver and Mr. Yantis sit in a red kayak in calm waters, passing a goose and her two goslings on the banks. The skeptics are talking about how to study the toll taken by constant interruption from e-mail and other digital bursts.

Behavioral studies have shown that performance suffers when people multitask. These researchers are wondering whether attention and focus can take a hit when people merely anticipate the arrival of more digital stimulation.

“The expectation of e-mail seems to be taking up our working memory,” Mr. Yantis says.

Working memory is a precious resource in the brain. The scientists hypothesize that a fraction of brain power is tied up in anticipating e-mail and other new information — and that they might be able to prove it using imaging.

“To the extent you have less working memory, you have less space for storing and integrating ideas and therefore less to do the reasoning you need to do,” says Mr. Kramer, floating nearby.

Over the course of the next few days, the rafters find themselves darting in and out of such scientific conversations. Two scientists packing their tents discuss which imaging techniques may best show the effects of digital overload on the brain. The full group tosses around ways to measure the release of brain chemicals into the bloodstream. A pair paddling the big raft talk about how to apply neuroeconomics — measuring how the brain values information — to understand compulsive texting by teenagers.

The conversations blur, with periods of silence and awed looks at surroundings — the circling hawks, the bighorn sheep. There are moments, too, when the men experience intense focus during physical challenges, like rafting the rapids or hiking narrow canyon walls.

This is the rhythm of the trip: As the river flows, so do the ideas.

“There’s a real mental freedom in knowing no one or nothing can interrupt you,” Mr. Braver says. He echoes the others in noting that the trip is in many ways more effective than work retreats set in hotels, often involving hundreds of people who shuffle through quick meetings, wielding BlackBerrys. “It’s why I got into science, to talk about ideas.”

‘Third-Day Syndrome’

“Time is slowing down,” Mr. Kramer says. He has been moving quickly his whole life, since he left home at 15, and has elevated himself to a position of great influence. It’s the second day on the river, and he has finished packing his tent. He’s the first of the morning to do so, but he feels no urgency.

He has not read any of the research papers he brought. And the $25 million e-mail? “I was never worried about it. I haven’t thought about it,” he says, as if the very idea were silly.

Mr. Kramer says the group has become more reflective, quieter, more focused on the surroundings. “If I looked around like this at work, people would think I was goofing off,” he says.

The others are more relaxed too. Mr. Braver decides against coffee, bypassing his usual ritual. The next day, he neglects to put on his watch, though he cautions against reading too much into it. “I sometimes forget to put my watch on at home, but in fairness, I usually have my phone with me and it has a clock on it.”

Mr. Strayer, the believer, says the travelers are experiencing a stage of relaxation he calls “third-day syndrome.” Its symptoms may be unsurprising. But even the more skeptical of the scientists say something is happening to their brains that reinforces their scientific discussions — something that could be important to helping people cope in a world of constant electronic noise.

“If we can find out that people are walking around fatigued and not realizing their cognitive potential,” Mr. Braver says, then pauses and adds: “What can we do to get us back to our full potential?”

What he is getting at is something the scientists won’t put a fine point on until the last few minutes of the trip: they have ideas on how to answer this question.

Heading Home

Later that night, back at the Recapture Lodge, Mr. Kramer reclaims his laptop from the front desk. At first, he says he’ll wait to log on until he showers and rests. Then he decides to have a quick peek. He has received 216 e-mail messages, but nothing about the military grant.

“The $25 million saga continues,” he says, and logs off.

The next morning, he and Mr. Braver sit in the back of the car, heading to the airport, the pair of skeptics sharing beef jerky and a perspective. The trip didn’t transform them, but it did get them to change the way they think about their research — and themselves.

Mr. Braver says that when he retrieved his phone the night before, it dawned on him how much he turns to it in tiny moments of boredom: “Sometimes I do use it as an excuse to be antisocial.”

When he gets back to St. Louis, he says, he plans to focus more on understanding what happens to the brain as it rests. He wants to use imaging technology to see whether the effect of nature on the brain can be measured and whether there are other ways to reproduce it, say, through meditation.

Mr. Kramer says he wants to look at whether the benefits to the brain — the clearer thoughts, for example — come from the experience of being in nature, the exertion of hiking and rafting, or a combination.

Mr. Atchley says he can see new ways to understand why teenagers decide to text even in dangerous situations, like driving. Perhaps the addictiveness of digital stimulation leads to poor decision-making. Mr. Yantis says a late-night conversation beneath stars and circling bats gave him new ways to think about his research into how and why people are distracted by irrelevant streams of information.

Even without knowing exactly how the trip affected their brains, the scientists are prepared to recommend a little downtime as a path to uncluttered thinking. As Mr. Kramer puts it: “How many years did we prescribe aspirin without knowing the exact mechanism?”

As they near the airport, Mr. Kramer also mentions a personal discovery: “I have a colleague who says that I’m being very impolite when I pull out a computer during meetings. I say: ‘I can listen.’ ”

“Maybe I’m not listening so well. Maybe I can work at being more engaged.”

From the New York Times
http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Attracting What you want or don't want

From The Secret Daily Teachings

Each of us is attracting in every moment of our lives. For a complimentary subscription, visit http://www.earlytorise.com.

The average Nicaraguan is born in a shack with a dirt floor. He earns less than $15 a week.

E, my gardener in Nicaragua, and Y, my housekeeper, do considerably better than that. But they are still, by U.S. standards, poor. Since I am in daily contact with E and Y when I’m here, I often think about how I can help them earn more money. They want more material goods in their lives (and who could blame them, when they see how we gringos live in person and on television).

E and Y have so little — $500 would give them a house for life — and I’d like nothing better than to wow them with a life-changing bonus. But I know from experience that giving them money will do nothing good. It will go as quickly as it came.

Given money always does. Worse, it will reinforce the very bad idea that money comes from me to them, instead of from their own labor and ingenuity.

I hope this doesn’t sound like the rationalization of a cheap man.

I did give Y the money for her house. But I made it a loan and had her repay it, because I wanted her to understand that money is real and represents something of value (hard work, enterprise, etc.). Also, I wanted to give her the chance to feel that the house was hers.

But for every dollar I’ve given Y, E has hit me up for a dollar too. E is not building a house with his money. He’s taking care of all sorts of "emergencies" that keep coming up. Because I don’t want to cause trouble between Y and E, I’ve been giving him his matching loans even though I know it’s not good for him.

What I try to do is lend E and Y money when it seems they really need it and figure out ways to let them earn more by doing other things. E is learning to fix things around the house and to paint. Y is learning to cook.

These skills will definitely help. But there’s an obstacle they face that is greater than their poverty or their lack of knowledge. It’s the idea they have about what the world owes them.

Y and E went to grammar school (the only school they had) during the Sandinista years. The Sandinistas, to remind you, were Communists — and, as a result, Y and E were taught two very dumb ideas about wealth:

Everyone is entitled to an equal share of it. ("To each according to his needs.")

Those who have more of it than average should give it up. ("From each according to his means.")

These ideas move very quickly into thoughts like these:

"It is the responsibility of my government to take care of me."

"It is the responsibility of my boss and the business I work for to make me secure and financially successful."

And I can sometimes see — or think I see –thoughts like these flickering around in the back of E’s mind.

For E, and maybe for Y too, the path to wealth is his boss, who has the money that E wants. He doesn’t want to have money like me. He wants to have my money. He sees money as a sort of static thing — that there is just so much of it in the world and that the only way to get some for himself is to take it from someone else. Since I’m the only wealthy guy he knows, it makes perfect sense to him that his strategy for growing rich should be based on "101 ways to talk my boss into giving me money."

Wrongheaded ideas about entitlement and static wealth are not by any means unique to Communist countries. They exist in every country of the world. In the United States, the country I know best, they are widespread — and probably growing.

In the U.S., they manifest themselves in all sorts of speciously good-hearted notions, such as:

Businesspeople are basically greedy and unethical.

Professors, artists, and writers are not.

There should be a limit to how much a CEO makes.

The more government regulates business, the better it is for the people.

I could go on, but I will not.

I’d rather get back to the main and essential point: The way you think about wealth is highly likely to affect your behavior in regard to it.

For example:

If you think you are entitled to be taken care of by the government, it is probable that you will spend some time and effort applying for government handouts.

If you think that all the profits of a company should be distributed to its workers, you’ll never be happy with what you earn.

If you think that no one is entitled to have more money than you, you’ll spend your time getting friends and acquaintances to give you some of theirs.

None of that will make you wealthy. In fact, it will make it harder for you to acquire wealth. Every minute you spend thinking about or asking for money you didn’t earn is a minute wasted and a bad habit reinforced.

Becoming wealthy is not difficult if you are willing to work for it. Anyone who does the simple things I recommend in ETR can and will become wealthy. The trick is to overcome inertia — to get yourself going. In other words, action.

Action is the key, but action won’t happen until you decide that you yourself — and no one else — are responsible for your success. Get off to a good start today by retelling yourself the following truths:

"My parents owe me nothing."

"My children owe me nothing."

"My friends owe me nothing."

"The world owes me nothing."

http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Communication is a Key Part of Leadership

Good leaders, whatever their profession, know how to communicate in stressful times. While there are many ways to do this, some of them fairly involved, here is one of the simplest that anyone can do. The more open you are to this process, and the more you expect it to work, the faster it will work for you. But not being open to it or having doubts about it or thinking it’s an entirely idiotic and meaningless waste of time won’t prevent it from working as long as you stick with it — again, it will just take longer to converge.
Push the Boundaries of Intuition with Hypnosis

Here’s what to do:

1. Take out a blank sheet of paper or open up a word processor where you can type (I prefer the latter because it’s faster).
2. Write at the top, “What is my true purpose in life?”
3. Write an answer (any answer) that pops into your head. It doesn’t have to be a complete sentence. A short phrase is fine.
4. Repeat step 3 until you write the answer that makes you cry. This is your purpose.
Easy Web Video Software
http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

The Gift of Fear

Today I write about one of the most important books I know about intuition-
The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker. I highly recommend this book, published a few years ago but very relevant today. It is written by a world class expert on predicting violent behavior. If you follow de Becker's advice you will live more fully, courageously and realistically.
Push the Boundaries of Intuition with Hypnosis

This post is prompted because two of my friends, Radha Singh (Wisdom From the Heart)and Haimdat Sawh whom I recently talked to about this book thanked me for guiding them to it.Their enthusiastic responses reminded me how important this book is to all of us.

Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They have a choice.Distrust the fear, or use it to force them to action that can save them. The author argues that we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive. In the book readers are taught how to identify the warning signals of a potential attacker and recommends strategies for dealing with the problem before it becomes life threatening. The book has many actual case studies which are gripping and suspenseful.De Becker uses these to suggest tactics for dealing with similar situations.

Learning to predict violence is essential to preventing it. If we understand the psychology of violence,we may be able to prevent more violent crime.

We all have a great gift of intuition,The Gift of Fear shows us how to use it effectively.
Milton Drepaul
http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Modern Living Will

I, __________________________, being of sound mind and body, do not wish to be kept alive indefinitely by artificial means. She was later booked at the California Highway Patrol's Glendale-Verdugo Hills Station on the single misdemeanor charge. "
Sunless Tanning

The star of the hit reality television show “The Simple Life” was then taken to Glendale City Jail. She was released 2 hours and 25 minutes later after posting a $15,000 bail.

Residents, who saw Richie’s 2005 black Mercedes Benz speeding on the wrong way, called 911 to report the incident. When the CHP officers arrived, the star had already stopped in the carpool lane and her vehicle was observed to be facing the right direction.

Breathalyzer test revealed that the star was not drunk. When questioned, Richie admitted that she had smoked marijuana and taken the painkiller Vicodin.

This was not the first time that the 25-year-old star was arrested. In February 2003, Richie was arrested in Malibu for possession of heroin and for driving with a suspended license. She was sentenced to spend time in rehabilitation.

The charges were later dropped when she completed the terms of her probation. Still, there are no reports whether Monday’s DUI arrest violated terms of her previous probation.

She is due to appear in the municipal court in Glendale on Tuesday and will be represented by Howard Weitzman, a popular celebrity lawyer.

“It is what it is,” a representative told E! Last October, she checked herself voluntarily in a treatment center to find out the reason behind her “continued weight loss”, her publicist stated.

Long Distance Discount.

http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Changing Difficult Relationships From The Inside

For years I have followed the advice of Stuart Wilde (The Little Money Bible ) and sent light and love to difficult people in my life. This technique is simple and has worked wonderfully well for me. I pass it on to my readers in the hope that it ill make life easier for them.

I quote Stuart from the Little Money Bible,"As well as moving forward towards your goals physically, through action, simultaneously clear a path on the inner level by blowing light and love ahead of you.For example,if there is a person in your way, your (female) boss, for example, start every morning by sitting quietly and seeing her in your mind's eye. Bring her up close to you so that you are almost eyeball to eyeball; then breathe a long breath in,and expel that breath out into her heart. No matter how antagonistic you may feel, send her Light and love, and do that ceremoniously 11 times. She will change. It appears that the harmfulness of the cheeseburger you eat is lessened if you are a caring person who eats it in the company of someone you love.

Clinical studies have shown that isolation is harmful to your health. Here are some interesting results from those studies.

Unmarried heart patients were 3 times more likely to die within 5 years.
Heart patients who felt the least loved had 50% more arterial damage than those who felt the most loved.
Women who felt isolated were 3 ½ times as likely to die of breast, ovarian or uterine cancer over a 17-year period.

Dr.Ornish’s research corroborates what has been termed the ‘Roseta Effect’. Until 1965, the people who lived in the small town of Roseta, Pennsylvania, appeared impervious to heart disease. Residents in the nearby town of Bangor, smoked as much and ate similar food. The most striking difference between the two communities was Roseta’s highly bonded social life. Roseta was a community of mostly third-generation Italian immigrants, who had strong links to family and friends.
From Milton Drepaul
Sport Nutrition
http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Surrogate EFT for Healing

This year I have been experimenting with surrogate EFT for healing. My 86 year old mother became seriously ill and out family feared she had reached the point of exiting this life.

None of my family, including her, believed in energy healing so in that tense atmosphere where fears and doubts predominated I often retired to a quiet place and systematically did EFT on my mother's fears and other family member's fears and doubts.

I have had absolutely remarkable success. My mom has become healthy and happier. Other family memmbers have progressively become calmer and more co -operative with each other.

Later I will detail some of the affirmations I used and also illustrate how I gained access to other fears and doubts bylisteningclosely to statement and negative predictions which were repeated.

Milton Drepaul
Technorati Profile
http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

Drug-free Procedure Controls and Reverses Diabetes

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) -- A diabetes epidemic is overtaking the United States and the rest of the world. In less than 20 years, governments and
social security systems may go broke paying expenses generated by this
preventable illness. Diabetes cases are expected to double before the year
2025, and their health care costs will increase from $163 billion per year to
$396 billion or more.

But while hospitals and public health services gear up for what they describe as an inevitable catastrophe, a smallbut growing number of diabetes patients are learning how to lose weight, balance their blood sugar, reduce their bodies’ need for insulin, and heal complications such as leg ulcers and insufficient circulation in the toes and feet. They are doing this not by going on rigorous diets or exercise programs but rather by tapping with their fingertips on key acupuncture points while focusing on symptoms or emotional issues.

“EFT is bioenergetic medicine,” explains best-selling health author Joseph Mercola, D.O. “It’s based on the same energymeridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness of needles.

This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmations works to clear the ‘short-circuits’ – the emotional blocks – fromthe body's bioenergy system, thus restoring the balance that is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease. "Some day the medical profession will wake up and realize that unresolved emotional issues are the main cause of 85 percent of all illnesses, including diabetes,” he says. “Whenthey do, EFT will be one of their primary healing tools, as it already is for me."

In one of many reports posted at the EFT website, Michael, a 59-year-old obese male, suffered from advanced type 2 diabetes, leg ulcers, and leg and back pain. After he learned EFT, which takes just a few minutes, his insulin requirement dropped from three injections perday to one per week, his blood sugar level dropped from 400 to 109, his leg ulcers began to heal, the blood pressure and circulation in his feet increased, his leg and back pain disappeared, and his energy level increased dramatically.

“Michael’s results may sound unusual,” says Gary Craig, the Stanford-trained engineer who developed EFT, “but in fact, his results are what EFT practitioners have come to expect. As soon as you removeenergy blocks, the body often repairs itself without the use of prescription drugs or anything else. Americans suffer an estimated one billion colds each year and miss 150 million work days annually. Most people rely on over-the-counter medication to relieve symptoms temporarily. But a technique that balances the body’s acupuncture meridian system provides relief from cold and flu symptoms by diminishing the effects of stress on the immune system.

Stanford trained engineer, Gary Craig originally developed Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to improve and shorten the psychotherapy process. EFT users soon reported a decrease in stress levels and an increase in overall well-being. They reported having fewer colds and allergies after treating stress conditions with EFT.

Craig explains, “as we received these kind of reports, we began targeting physical symptoms with EFT and the results were astounding. People quickly relieved symptoms like sore throats, coughs, nasal congestion. EFT even worked on chronic pain associated with migraines, arthritis and fibromyalgia.”

A study published in Psychosomatic Medicine reports that people experiencing negative emotions are more likely to become ill when exposed to a cold virus than people who generally experience positive emotions. Other studies link psychological stress to a compromised immune system, increasing susceptibility to cold viruses. Says Craig, “EFT effectively neutralizes the stress and unresolved emotional issues that are compromising the immune systems of Americans.”

Dr. Joseph Mercola, best-selling author and owner of the number one natural health website advocates, “if you are stressed please consider EFT, which is an amazingly effective tool to address the foundational and core reasons as to how the stress is impairing your immune system. I have been particularly impressed with its ability to improve the body's immune response to infection immediately.”

Dr. Mercola taught EFT to a 9 year old patient who had been on antibiotics for a week for a raging sinus infection that wasn’t improving. Mercola says, “I taught her EFT and treated her in less than five minutes and 100% of her symptoms were gone. This work is absolutely amazing. I have also used EFT on colds and coughs in about six other people, including staff members with equally rapid and instant relief.”

EFT balances the acupuncture meridian system by combining gentle fingertip tapping on key points while focusing on physical or emotional issues. According to Craig, “it is used by people all over the world as an effective stress management tool. Now science is showing real evidence that negative emotions and stress compromise health. EFT is providing Americans with a means to become happier and healthier and to this end I have chosen to provide the EFT Manual free from the EFT website.”

Over 300,000 have downloaded Craig’s free training manual and another 10,000 download it each month. The official EFT Manual has been translated by volunteer practitioners into nine languages.

The EFT Manual explains the basics so that anyone can begin applying EFT right away. It is rich in concepts and specific language to use.

By Dr. Carol Look, Cht

I have read more than 20 books on the subject of attracting
abundance, trying to figure out the trick to having (“manifesting”)
more of what I want in my life. What I learned was that money is just
another form of energy, and that there is a particular VIBRATION
associated with abundance. While I understood the concepts, nothing
ever changed when I “applied” what I had learned. It was not until I
combined the book knowledge with EFT and the energy of love and gratitude that I was able to change my limiting beliefs, expand my comfort zones, neutralize my deserving issues , direct my feelings and expand my prosperity consciousness---all of which had been driving the results in my life. Using EFT, I was able to change my VIBRATION in my daily life around money, worry, and the future, which in turn opened the door for success and abundance.

Over the past few years, I have conducted seminars and some
teleclass series covering the topic “EFT for Success and Abundance.”
The blocks and themes keep recurring, as do the progress reports of
people that persistently use tapping for abundance in their lives.
Below are some of the themes that need to be addressed.

COMFORT ZONES: When I first started using EFT for
success in my own life, I didn’t “believe” in comfort zones---what Gary
refers to as ceilings on your progress based on the “writing on your
walls.” When I noticed my income for two years running was exactly the same, I realized this was evidence of a comfort zone operating in my financial life.

This may not seem strange unless you are a private practitioner in
the mental health field. There are so many variables---holidays that
fall on different days of the week, my own vacation time, clients’
vacation time, illness, referrals, the economic situation etc--- that
it is virtually impossible to predict your annual income. Two years in
a row, despite all these variables, I made the exact (within $1000)
same income working as a full time private practitioner. Once I used
EFT to break through these comfort zones (after some resistance of
course) my income shot up over 20% the next year. I had not raised my
fee, had not done any advertising, and the country’s economic situation
had in fact worsened. I used phrases such as:

“Even though I don’t dare raise my income, I deeply and completely accept myself…

“Even though I obviously have a block to earning more than $ XXX, I deeply and completely love and accept this conflict.”

“Even though I have trouble seeing myself earning more than $ XXX, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

“Even though I don’t feel safe making more than $ XXX because
they’ll be jealous, I deeply and completely accept and love who I am.”

LIMITING BELIEFS: Dozens of clients in my abundance
classes have told me that they had siblings who were seen as either
“slow learners” or having some form of “difficulty” in school. Some of
these siblings turned out to be brilliant while some are still
struggling to this day. The point is that my clients learned from their
families “I’m not supposed to shine” and that if they did shine,
they were taking attention away from their struggling sibling. It
didn’t seem to matter if the sibling was older, younger, the same sex
or not. What mattered was that the parents compared the two, and
scolded the “fast learner” for looking good, or “showing off.” The
message was “don’t succeed or you’ll hurt someone else.”

“Even though I’m not supposed to shine because it will hurt my sister, I deeply and completely accept my brilliance.”

“Even though I will lose their approval if I do well, I deeply and completely accept my talents.”

“Even though it’s not safe to succeed, I choose to feel safe when I am doing what I love.”

“Even though they don’t feel comfortable when I succeed, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway.”

“Even though I’ll never forget his scolding me when I succeeded, I deeply and completely forgive myself be being so fast.”

“Even though I’m afraid I’ll be rejected if I succeed…”

Other common limiting beliefs that block financial wealth are
prejudices against wealthy people. “Fran” told me she thought rich
people were “shallow and mean.” Apparently her mother had taught her
this concept, based on feelings of jealousy and a scarring incident
with a neighbor when growing up. Fran adopted this belief, but was
unaware that she could therefore never BE rich, (one of THOSE PEOPLE)
for if she became one, she would not only be seen as shallow and mean
(her assumption), more importantly, she would risk the deep disapproval
of her mother (her deepest fear). These prejudices about wealthy people
come in all shapes and sizes. They must be uncovered and treated with
EFT if you want to improve your financial situation.

“Even though I’m convinced ALL rich people are mean and shallow…”

“Even though she’ll judge me if I make more money…”

“Even though I’m afraid to be successful because my mother will reject me…”

“Even though I’ll be envied too much if I’m rich…”

DESERVING ISSUES: I have many individual clients
who feel guilty when they have desires to do well financially. When I
asked “Jeff” why, he said that he already “had it good” because his
father worked hard to educate him and he was a superb athlete… “why should I take more away from other people?” (1) The belief that his success would hurt someone else is a mistake. (2) The belief that there is a limited supply
of abundance is also, in my opinion, off base. (3) As long as he thinks
he has had “his share” he will sabotage progress or inadvertently
reject opportunities. Jeff didn’t feel deserving of financial success,
and was finally able to see a pattern of rejecting terrific
opportunities for advancement in his job. He realized he was working
hard to tread water, just making ends meet, much like friends of his
who struggled with comfort zone issues in sports.

“Even though I don’t deserve any more, I’ve had enough, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway.”

“Even though my mother said we were lucky to have what we had, I deeply…

“Even though I don’t want to be selfish and take more than my share, I accept and love myself for having desires.”

“Even though my father scolded me for wanting more, I deeply and completely…”

PROSPERITY CONSCIOUSNESS: Whether you believe you
don’t have enough time, money, love or success, the consciousness
behind your belief will block you from receiving financial abundance.
Your level of belief exudes a particular vibration. In
energetic terms, the theory states that your consciousness about
abundance has a certain capacity; you will receive exactly what your
consciousness is capable of handling. The good news is that your
consciousness can be expanded to believe there is enough to go around.

“Even though there was never enough money when I was a kid, I deeply and completely accept my fears.”

“Even though I remember the fight my parents had about money, and I think money is bad, I deeply…”

“Even though I’m afraid there won’t be enough, so I need to hold on tight, I deeply and completely accept who I am.

“Even though she told me there wasn’t enough, I choose to believe there is enough now.”

FEELINGS: Do you feel rich? If not in your bank account, do you at least feel rich in love or compassion or some other way? My point is you can’t get rich if you feel poor. So you will need to find some way of FEELING rich in your life. Notice the abundance in nature, or notice how many clients you do have, or how many good friends are in your life. However you do it, you must change the vibration you have and feel wealthy on an emotional level.

“Even though my father said we would always be poor, I choose to remember how much love I feel.”

“Even though I feel poor and anxious about money, I deeply and completely accept these fears.

“Even though my mother taught me it was better to be poor, I love and accept her anyway.”

Combining EFT with the energy of love and gratitude has contributed
to huge payoffs in my life and the lives of my clients. EFT was the
missing piece all along. Believe in PLENTY… THERE IS ENOUGH!

Carol Look

http://feeds.feedburner.com/EmotionalFreedom

EFT for Job Loss Fears

by Milton Drepaul

According to an article in The Washington Post (April 4, 2006) though getting fired ranks as one of the events in life which causes greatest stress it seems that the constant fear of losing your job can actually damage your mental and physical health even more.

It appears that the unrelenting nature of the stress is linked more strongly to depression and health problems than actual job loss.

The constant stress causes a variety of problems generally starting with sleeplessness, which is itself connected to more health problems. Since the nineties there has been a growing trend of companies downsizing and merging. This could have major troubling health implications for North American workers.

While life events can trigger negative emotions there are things we can do to reduce the impact of these negative responses. We concede that our feelings are very complicated and fragile. It takes some effort to manage them.If we empower ourselves with positive emotions then we send positive energy to boost our immune system. This generally results in vibrant health.

The danger for most of us is that we live in societies which encourage dwelling on negative feelings. It's fine to accept and acknowledge that we will face challenges in life. How we respond to them determine not only our physical health but our emotional and spiritual well being. Wallowing in self pity and other negative responses can encode harmful emotions deep into our cell memories.

Our jobs are the major focus of most of the lives. There is tremendous potential for both risk and success. So although many studies show that periods of employment are detrimental to our health it is not a surprise that the worry of losing your job can be even more harmful to our health. In my counseling I urge my clients to watch what they say about their life.(Often I recommend the books The Game of Life by Florence Shovel Shin written in early 20th century and Happiness Is a Choice by Barry Neil Kaufmann).

It's quite astonishing how often we unconsciously manifest bad things in our lives. Many spiritual teachers have taught that we create self fulfilling prophecies by focusing on fears of what might happen. Therefore if you are constantly putting your intention on the fear of losing your job you increase not decrease the chance of it happening. In a perverse way you add your own energy to propel that event into being.

If on the other hand you take Stuart Wilde's advice in The Little Money Bible and choose to love your job and send love and light to your superiors, your company and your fellow workers you have a much greater chance that you will be happier and healthier.

Learning to deal with stress can be quite simple. Don't get me wrong I'm not advocating some chemical anti-depressant or long periods of costly therapy. I heartily recommend a simple to learn technique which I have been using on myself and my clients for the last two years. It's called EFT or the Emotional Freedom Technique (Created by Gary Craig). You can learn it in a few minutes. You may need the help of someone who has used it often to deal with hidden fears.

Milton Drepaul is co-author of CXC English and CXC English B . Are you tired of feeling that you're not normal just because you don't have a strong sex drive?

Fortunately, your libido doesn't have to lag behind because a new procedure (EFT) can help you lift the lid regarding your intimacy issues.

According to an article in the online Journal of the American Psychological Association (APA), conventional sex experts are labeling some women with Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD), a medical condition that they attempt to control with drugs. Other experts view women's sexual interest levels as being influenced by relationship issues, or psychological issues relating to past abuse, trauma or depression.

Before applying a testosterone patch or taking antidepressants to alter your passionate desires chemically ... consider EFT.

EFT is a uniquely gentle approach to alleviating the pain, distress, anger, shame, fear, guilt and embarrassment often associated with "sexual dysfunction." You can also relieve your unresolved negative emotions, beliefs or unproductive feelings about sexual intimacy.

EFT is a form of acupuncture without needles and you can easily learn to do it yourself. While considering the intimacy issues that are troubling you, you simply tap on a series of acupuncture points using your own fingertips. This stimulates your body's energy meridians and restores the free flow of your "subtle energies." The result is often a return to normal libido.

Here's a story of a woman who treated her own sexual difficulties while sitting in an audience of 300 at Gary Craig's EFT Seminar.

Marilyn (whose name has been changed to protect privacy) was a participant in one of Gary Craig's EFT seminars and chose to tap for her own intimacy issues while watching Gary (the EFT founder) work with someone on stage. Her results were remarkable.

During a break, Gary met Marilyn who was crying "tears of joy." Marilyn shared with Gary that she had spent years in conventional therapy to address her issues with men regarding abuse, abandonment and incest.

She found the conventional therapy to be helpful in that she had many "cognitive insights" and "understandings" about these issues. But the problems remained unresolved; she still distanced herself emotionally and romantically from men.

According to EFT theory, Marilyn's issues remained unresolved because she was still storing the issues in her energy meridian system.

Marilyn's tears of joy were because she had been tapping in the audience to clear these issues and she reported that she had genuinely resolved them. She finally had freedom from several longstanding issues. And this relief finally cleared the way for a truly meaningful romantic relationship with her boyfriend, Donald.

Gary reports, "It was easy to see the twinkle in her eye and I remember saying, with humor, "I think Donald owes me a Ferrari!" She smiled and said, "I think you're right!"

After the seminar, Marilyn wrote to Gary to give details on the work she had done during the seminar. She reported that she completely cleared three separate and intense traumas that where inhibiting her ability to feel safe with men.

First issue: Marilyn had been severely beaten by her husband 22 years previously. During the beating she felt that her death was imminent. While doing EFT she realized that she spent the last 22 years protecting herself from men and not being open to them, sexually or otherwise. Before doing EFT in the audience, Marilyn identified her distress as an 8 out of 10. EFT cleared this trauma to a zero.

Second issue: During the seminar, Marilyn realized that she had abandonment issues that stemmed from the sudden death of her boyfriend whom she loved deeply. This was 32 years ago. While Borrowing Benefits, Marilyn identified her distress as a 7 out of 10 and she cleared this trauma to zero.

She realized that she no longer needed to feel any sense of abandonment. She recognized that this would have a strong positive effect on her current relationship with her boyfriend.

Third issue: When Marilyn was 13, she was a victim of incest at the hands of her 14-year-old brother. She said that at the time, she had been completely passive. As she was tapping during the seminar, she knew that she would never be passive again and leave her body during intimate times with her partner.

Marilyn returned home to her boyfriend Donald and reported being "fully present in love making for the first time in my life!!! What a reward!!!! Yes, Gary, you are right ... Donald does owe you a Ferrari!!!

I FEEL LIKE A NEW PERSON!!!!!!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!"

Gary followed up with Marilyn some time later and she reported that she was no longer in a relationship with Donald, but had gone on to date other men and her romantic freedom was generating ecstatic benefits.

While a complete description of EFT is beyond the scope of this article, you can learn all the basics from the free EFT Get Started Package on the EFT Web site.
